Custom-Fit Mouthguards: How They Are Made, Price and Impression
Quick answer: a custom-fit mouthguard is made in a laboratory from an impression of your teeth, taken at home with a kit sent to you after you order. Expect to pay from €79.90 to €109.90 depending on the design, allow 5–10 working days of manufacturing after your impression has been approved, and tracked delivery is free from €39. This guide explains each step; to order, go to the custom-fit collection.

How is a custom-fit mouthguard made?
It all starts with your dental impression: the impression tray filled with silicone putty records the shape of your teeth and the area immediately around them. At the laboratory, this impression is the basis for making an individual mouthguard, or gum shield, fitted to your dental arches rather than to a generic size. Every photo of an impression is checked before manufacturing: an unusable impression (teeth not readable, a tear, a double impression) does not go into production.
This laboratory work is what sets it apart from a boil-and-bite model (thermoformable), which you soften and mould yourself at home in hot water. A boil-and-bite mouthguard is fine for starting out or getting equipped quickly; the custom-fit range aims for a more precise fit, better long-term comfort and greater stability during impacts, in boxing, MMA, rugby and other contact sports played regularly.
The impression at home, step by step
The kit instructions describe the full procedure. In short: first try the empty impression tray in front of a mirror to choose the size that covers all the relevant teeth without them touching the edges. Then quickly mix the two putties until they are a uniform colour, spread the mixture in the impression tray, and press your teeth into it in a single controlled movement, without chewing or moving sideways.
Keep still while it sets (about three minutes with the current kit), breathe through your nose, then remove everything carefully. Rinse in cold water and photograph the impression from several angles: all the relevant teeth must be visible, centred and sharp. Send the photos to contact@proteksports.fr for approval before returning the kit — this is the step that secures the manufacturing.
Price: what explains the differences
Prices range from €79.90 (Classic in a single colour) to €99.90 (country and region designs) and then €109.90 (personalised with text and logo). The difference comes from the design and graphic work, not the manufacturing quality: the dental impression kit is included in every case. A reinforced thickness (+1.5 mm, +€10) is available for sports with repeated impacts.
Lead times and delivery
The dental impression kit is dispatched within 24–48 working hours of your order. Add the time needed to take the impression and have it approved, then 5–10 working days of manufacturing. The finished mouthguard is sent by tracked delivery: you receive a tracking number by e-mail, and tracked delivery is free from €39. If you are preparing for a competition, order at least three weeks ahead so that every step can be completed without stress.
Personalisation and laboratory checks
Colours, text, logo, flag or a design generated by artificial intelligence: the visuals are prepared in the configurator, can be viewed in 3D (indicative preview), and are then checked by the laboratory before production. The design is adapted to the curve of the mouthguard, so its placement may differ slightly from the flat preview. Clubs equipping several players use the club offer to coordinate colours and logos.
Care and replacement
When you receive it, first take the bite registration on the lower surface: this is the only time it goes in hot water. After that, rinse it in cold water after every session, brush it gently, let it air-dry and keep it in a ventilated case, away from heat. Replace the mouthguard as soon as it is split, thinned, pierced, deformed or has become too loose. Its lifespan depends on how often you use it and how you look after it; there is no universal lifespan.
Limitations and precautions
A custom-fit mouthguard is not recommended with orthodontic braces: every appliance is unique and changes over time, so ask your orthodontist for advice. Taking an impression is not advised if you have pain, a loose tooth, recent dental treatment or any doubt — your dentist remains the right person to consult. A mouthguard helps protect your teeth during an impact, but no equipment removes every risk. For other questions, see the guide to taking the bite registration and our frequently asked questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a custom-fit mouthguard made?
You take an impression of your teeth at home with the kit provided. The laboratory checks the photo of the impression, then makes the mouthguard in the laboratory from that impression. Manufacturing takes 5 to 10 working days after approval.
Is a home impression reliable?
Yes, if you follow the instructions: several impression tray sizes are supplied, and every photo is checked by the laboratory before the kit is sent back. A blurred, torn or incomplete impression is flagged to be redone rather than manufactured.
What should I do if my impression has failed?
Send a photo to contact@proteksports.fr before returning the kit. The laboratory will tell you whether the impression is usable or needs to be taken again with the remaining putties. See also the detailed instructions.
Why do prices vary between models?
From €79.90 (Classic) to €99.90 (countries and regions) and then €109.90 (text and logo), the difference comes down to the design and the graphic work. Manufacturing, the included dental impression kit and quality control are identical. Only the reinforced thickness (+1.5 mm) adds €10.
How much time should you allow before a competition?
Order at least three weeks ahead: the kit is dispatched within 24–48 working hours, you take the impression and it is validated, then allow 5–10 working days of manufacturing and tracked delivery (free from €39).
From what age can you have a custom-fit one made?
An impression can be taken from the age of 7 to 8. As children’s teeth change, more frequent checks and replacements are needed. Boil-and-bite models are suitable from the age of 11.
Can you wear a custom-fit mouthguard with braces?
No, it isn't recommended: every brace is unique and changes over time, and the moulding could get in the way of the brackets or damage them. Ask your orthodontist or dentist for advice; they can point you towards a suitable solution.
Do you keep my impression in case I lose my mouthguard?
Impressions are usually kept for a while, so a mouthguard can be remade quickly without a new impression. Contact us with your order number to check whether your impression is still available.
