Take the Bite Registration for Your Custom-Fit Mouthguard

Custom-Fit Mouthguards

Record your lower teeth

Your custom-fit mouthguard has arrived. One last step at home records the impression of your lower teeth: the bite registration. It locks the piece against the lower arch and limits slipping during exertion.

Only the bottom surface touches the hot water. Never submerge the whole mouthguard: the shape made in the laboratory must stay intact.

Why the bite registration changes the fit

The laboratory moulded the upper surface on your impression. The lower surface stays smooth until you press your bite into it. Once set, this imprint provides support: the mouthguard stays in place when you clench, talk or take a hit.

Two steps not to be confused

The dental impression kit is used before manufacturing: you mould your teeth in the silicone, we check the photo, then the laboratory makes the piece. The bite registration comes afterwards, on receipt, on the mouthguard that has already been made.

A boil-and-bite mouthguard softens completely in hot water. Here, only the bite registration goes in the water: the rest of the piece already has its final shape.

  1. 1. Get your materials ready

Get out the mouthguard, a bowl of freshly boiled water and a timer. Read the four steps once before you start: the timing is tight.

  2. 2. Heat only the bite surface

Hold the mouthguard by one edge. Rest only the lower surface on the water, without letting the rest go under. Start the timer for 40 seconds. Switch hands if the steam gets uncomfortable.

  3. 3. Bite down firmly

Take the mouthguard out of the water, shake off the excess and put it in your mouth immediately. Bite down in your usual bite position for 20 seconds, without chewing or moving it.

  4. 4. Set it in cold water

Take the mouthguard out and run it under cold water. To improve retention, gently pinch the edges at the molars while rinsing.

A successful bite registration

The underside shows a clear imprint of your lower teeth, with no tears or double outline. In your mouth, the piece stays stable when you clench, with no painful pressure points. If the imprint is blurred or the mouthguard still slips, start again once only, reheating just the lower surface.

Common mistakes

  • Submerging the whole mouthguard: the laboratory-moulded shape gets distorted.
  • Moving or chewing during the 20 seconds: the imprint doubles up and holds poorly.
  • Putting it back in hot water once the bite registration has set: the fit deteriorates.

Once the bite registration is done, the mouthguard is ready. The silicone impression has already been used for production; daily care is then done in cold water, never in hot water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the bite registration be done only once?

Yes, once the imprint has set, the mouthguard is ready. Only start again if the first attempt is blurred or the mouthguard still slips, reheating only the bottom surface.

Can I put the whole mouthguard in hot water?

No. Only the underside — the bite registration — touches the water. The rest of the mouthguard already has its laboratory shape; fully immersing it would warp it.

What should I do if the bite registration is not clear?

Try once more: 40 seconds, bottom surface only, then bite down for 20 seconds without moving. If the result is still blurred, write to contact@proteksports.fr with a photo.

Can I put the mouthguard back in hot water afterwards?

No. After the bite registration, hot water, sunlight and radiators will warp the mouthguard. Daily care is done with cold water, as explained in the dental impression instructions and on every product page.
